Title:

Using NPAR to reveal "The Swan"

Abstract:

The use of 3D visualisation techniques to analyse, catalogue and display data from archaeological sites is becoming a widely accepted practice [Grabczewski et al. 2002: Sundstedt et al. 2004]. Our proposal is to use non-photorealistic animation and rendering (NPAR) techniques to display 3D data extracted from a historic shipwreck site in order to illustrate a very complex and inaccessible visual environment. The data has been acquired using a combination of photography, on-site drawings, video, analogue measurement, sonar scanning and digital surface scanning. This project is “work in progress” and draws on the various forms of data to investigate the most appropriate methods for recreating the site in 3D.Maritime archaeologists rely on drawing on site as a way of “editing out” unwanted information in a way that video and photography cannot. Therefore sketch type Non-Photorealistic rendering may be the ideal way to render the 3D surfaces for our reconstruction.
