This panel discussion is a follow-on to a 1986 SIGGRAPH-sponsored workshop on “Software Tools for User Interface Development:’ The workshop in ’86 consisted of discussions in the areas of windowing systems, user interface management systems, and graphical interaction techniques. This panel provides the opportunity to discuss these issues in a wider forum. Each panel participant has been selected to represent one of the four subgroups into which the workshop was divided: 1) goals for user interface tools; 2) needs of the interface designer; 3) software environment for user interface tools; and 4) internal architecture of user interface tools.
