During the 1930’s Jeff grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, and Colette in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1958 they met while driving from Boston to New York City. Jeff was a mathematics major and learning about creating visual art at Harvard College. After a five-year BFA painting program at Herron School of Art, Indianapolis, Colette received an MFA in painting and drawing from Boston University. They married in Evanston, Illinois in 1959 and moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota. Jeff earned a BA in art and mathematics from the University of North Dakota. They moved to Topeka, Kansas, and then to Lawrence, Kansas where they lived. The places they lived together with their personal art and mathematical insights have grown their collaborative art practice.
