Bio:

  • Dr. Lane is a proven leader with over 25 years of entrepreneurial experience managing the design, development and commercialization of state-of-the-art software technology for use in Interactive Entertainment, Virtual Reality, Computer Animation, and Distributed Training and Simulation applications. Dr. Lane’s responsibilities have ranged from basic technology development to computer hardware and software design, project management and business development.

    In 2001, Dr. Lane joined the faculty of the Computer and Information Science Department at the University of Pennsylvania and is currently a Professor of Practice and Director of the Computer Graphics and Game Technology Masters Program. Drawing on his background and experience in the computer gaming industry, Dr. Lane teaches courses on Computer Animation (CIS462/562), Advanced Topics in Computer Graphics and Animation (CIS660) and Computer Game Design and Development (CIS564 and CIS568). The current CIS568 course is focused on developing virtual reality and augmented reality applications using the Unity3D and Unreal game engines with the Vive virtual reality system and the Microsoft Hololens augmented reality display.

    In 2016 Dr. Lane founded Venturi Labs to provide a source of Philly-based internships for Penn engineering students interested in working on state-of-the-art graphics, game, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) related projects; to provide custom game, VR and AR content creation services to third parties and the Penn community (e.g. School of Engineering, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn Medical, etc.); and to help incubate and commercialize Intellectual Property created both by students at Penn and in house at Venturi Labs.

    Education. Dr. Lane received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Cornell University, a Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering from UCLA, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University.
