Abstract:

UNC Asheville’s STEAM Studio is a 12,000 sf making place which evolved from a collaboration between mechatronics and art with an intentional focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. Projects range from fabricating Wake, an installation in Times Square under the direction of Mel Chin, to course projects in which students designed and fabricated assistive technology with and for senior community members. Creative after-school and summer programming is marketed to girls and non-binary children. Other outreach projects engage area K-12 school groups, including students from the Qualla Boundary, the tribal lands of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.
