Abstract:
The rhinoctopus is a haptic video manipulation interface utilized as an additional visual component of a performance. As they squeeze and bend the controller, participants affect projected video in real-time. Currently, the Atlanta experimental group Rhinoctopus projects static edited video onto scrims during their live musical performance, creating a lush visual landscape synchronous to the audio soundtrack. This controller is being developed in order to create a more interactive, participatory environment for audiences to experience, increasing the level of experiential immersion while engaging members of the audience within the active realm of the performance.
