Abstract:


    Level-of-Detail (LOD) techniques allow optimization of computing resources by removing details indistinguishable by human perception. This is especially important in time-critical rendering when both random fluctuations in frame rate and rapid deterioration of image quality can induce undesirable effects such as motion sickness and negative training on the user. We present a technique of managing LOD within a 3D graphics application by employing fuzzy logic control. Our method achieves better stability in terms of frame-rate and little loss in image quality (due to hysteresis) by making use of a hybrid LOD scheme.
