Abstract:

We have been developing FTV (Free viewpoint TV), which uses multi-camera system [Tanimoto 2004]. This system was the world’s first real time system transmitting whole 3-D image data based on  Ray-Space theory. It was proposed to the MPEG meeting, and trig- gered discussion on multi-view video coding. Generally speaking,  multi-camera systems for IBR, such as FTV, need geometric camera calibration and color correction between cameras at the first stage.

Geometric camera calibration for IBR should be carried out on two steps. The first step is to put cameras at desired places as precisely as possible, and the second step is to modify captured videos by using camera parameters. Color correction for IBR is with similar  to geometric camera calibration. The first step is to adjust cam- era functions such as gain, gamma, brightness, exposure time and  aperture before capturing, and the second step is to modify captured videos [Ilie and Welch 2005]. This paper deals with the second step of color correction.
