Title:

    Advanced Issues in Level of Detail

Course Organizer(s):

Presenter(s)/Author(s):

Abstract:

    Prerequisites
    Knowledge of the basic LOD concept and experience with interactive graphics systems. Designed for developers who want to become sophisticated LOD users and researchers who want to broaden their knowledge of the field.

    Topics
    Classifying LOD error metrics, perceptual analysis of degradation in detail, balancing fidelity and performance, appearance-preserving simplification, parallel LOD computation, controlled topology reduction, and dynamic and view-dependent LOD.

    Description
    Level of Detail (LOD) methods have established themselves as a crucial tool for managing scene complexity in interactive 3D graphics. This advanced course addressed some important topics in the field: perceptual psychology, degradation of details, appropriate trade-offs between fidelity and frame rate, and current research (LOD error metrics, appearance-preserving simplification, parallel LOD computation, controlled reduction of topology during simplification, and view-dependent LOD).
