John received a B.S. in 1984 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a major in Computer Science and a minor in Visual Art. While at UMBC, John worked with Stan VanDerBeek in various animation media including claymation, digital video and computer graphics. In 1985, he worked for Singer LINK Simulation Systems as a software engineer for the Displays Division. In 1986, John received an M.S. in Computer Science from Ohio State University, where he was working with Charles Csuri researching and developing tools for computer character animation.
