    Special Session: Retrospectives II: The Early Years in Computer Graphics at MIT, Lincoln Lab and Harvard

Presenter(s)/Author(s):

Moderator(s):

Abstract:

    Transcript of the welcoming speech:
    Welcome back or welcome to Retrospective. I want to briefly go over a couple or things that I went over the first time, and you might have missed. In early 1988 SIGGRAPH funded a project called Milestones: The History of Computer Graphics. We have been working for the last year plus to define categories, to understand certain dates, decide what things we were going to look for, etc. The first draft of something called Significant Events will be published in the SIGGRAPH quarterly sometime this fall. At that time, I anticipate that the flood gates will open and all of the people that I either haven’t contacted, haven’t been able to find – will come out of the woodwork and say Jan, you forgot me. You forgot this. This date’s close, but it’s not quite accurate.

    So, I encourage all of you to get involved in the computer graphics project to document the major milestones. We’re also collecting films, slides, videotapes. etc. If you haven’t heard about the project and you want information, please give me a call. I realize that there is no phone number (303·623•8775) and no address for you to reach me — at least on the slides that we have today — but you but you can catch me after the Retrospectives and I’d be glad to give you one of my cards and share information. I hope all of you will get involved in the history of computer graphics.

    We have three new speakers for this Retrospective and I want to introduce you again to Michael S. Mahoney, who is going to act as the moderator. In case you missed it the first time, Mike is a professor Princeton. He is in the program in the history of science. He is editor of the ACM history series, and a distinguished member of the Milestone Advisory Board.
