Abstract:
SIGGRAPH Research From The Matrix to Maleficent
In today’s movies, almost anything can be created convincingly with computer graphics, from entire cities to the faces of movie stars. These incredible advances are in large part the result of close interactions between academic researchers and industry practitioners of computer graphics, facilitated in many ways by the ACM SIGGRAPH organization and conferences. This SIGGRAPH 2014 production session will overview a spectrum of technology collaborations between research and production, and detail a variety of collaboration examples from the work of the USC Institute for Creative Technologies with production companies such as ESC, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Rhythm & Hues, Image Metrics, Weta Digital, Industrial Light + Magic, Digital Domain, Framestore, and Activision on films including The Matrix, Spider-Man 2, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Avatar, Ender’s Game, The Avengers, Gravity, and Maleficent.
