Abstract:

The inspiration for the project described in this sketch was certainly the M. C. Escher lithograph ASCENDING AND DESCENDING. An image of this drawing can be seen at http://www.worldofescher.com/gallery. It is based on the continuous staircase illusion of L. S. and Roger Penrose and depicts a three-dimensional scene that appears to have properties that contradict what is possible in an actual Cartesian representation of spatial objects. The goal of this project was to add animation and a navigable viewpoint to this illusion by using the three-dimensional environment of OpenGL.
