Monika Fleischmann (1950), part of the artist collective Fleischmann & Strauss, is an internationally renowned German artist who has pioneered interactive media art. She established art-science labs in research institutions to realize their dedicated work. In 1987 they were co-founders of ART + COM in Berlin. Later, they initiated MARS (Media Arts & Research Studies) and the eCulture Factory at major German research institutions such as GMD, the National Research Center for Information Technology, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Media Communication and for Artificial Intelligence. For “Home of the Brain” (1989), one of the first artistic virtual reality installations, they were awarded the Golden Nica for Interactive Art by the Prix Ars Electronica in 1992. In 2018, Fleischmann and her partner Wolfgang Strauss were honored with the ACM SIGGRAPH Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in Digital Art, and Monika was inducted into the SIGGRAPH Academy.
