An LED display using active reflectors and free-space optical transmission

Abstract:

A large full-color LED display on a high-rise is now a common element in urban scenery. It is usually installed on the roof of a highrise as an independent construction, but is becoming more a part of a building design. However, it does not yet mix well with other architectural elements due to its inherent structural constraints. First, it is usually in the form of a rectangular plane. This may not always be the best form to fit a building design. Second, it is thick and usually opaque. For instance, it cannot be installed over the windows, and mix well with them. Third, it is usually monolithic. For instance, a building design may need a curved or even mobile-structured LED display, but current LED displays are too rigid to support such design needs.
