SIGGRAPH Asia 2023

Mark Billinghurst is Director of the Empathic Computing Laboratory, and Professor at the University of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia, and also at the University of Auckland in Auckland, New Zealand. He earned a PhD in 2002 from the University of Washington and conducts research on how virtual and real worlds can be merged, publishing over 750 papers on Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, remote collaboration, Empathic Computing, and related topics. In 2019 was given the ISMAR Career Impact Award in recognition for lifetime contribution to AR research and commercialization, and in 2023 elected as a Fellow of the IEEE.

Mark Billinghurst is Director of the Empathic Computing Laboration and Professor of Human Computer Interaction at the University of South Australia, Australia, and Professor in the Bioengineering Institute at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He earned a PhD in 2002 from the University of Washington and researches innovative computer interfaces that explore how virtual and real worlds can be merged, publishing over 550 research papers in topics such as Empathic Computing, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Collaborative Systems. He has been teaching classes on AR and VR since 2003, including many courses at ACM SigCHI and SIGGRAPH.

SIGGRAPH Asia 2008

Mark Billinghurst, director of the Human Interface Technology Laboratory New Zealand, develops innovative computer interfaces that explore how virtual and real worlds can be merged. He has produced over 80 technical publications and presented demonstrations and courses at a wide variety of conferences. He has a PhD from the University of Washington and conducts research in augmented and virtual reality, wearable computing, and conversational interfaces. He has previously worked at ATR Research Labs, British Telecom, and the MIT Media Laboratory. One of his research projects, the MagicBook, was winner of the 2001 Discover Award for best entertainment application.
