Abstract:

Shadows in 2D Anime play a significant role for expressing symbolic visual effects such as the character’s position and shape. However, animators frequently can’t draw detailed shadows according to their intentions because of time constraints and a lack of skilled animators. For solving this problem, we have developed a system that can generate shadows automatically. Our system provides simple shadows and shadows on the water by applying Simplification Filter and Water Mapping Filter. Also, our system only requires inputs of the 2D character animation layers generally composed in the Anime industry. Consequently, our system enables animators to intuitively produce Anime-like shadow animation in a short time.
