Abstract:
Muscle-based facial animation [Waters 1987; Lee et al. 1995] is one of the best approaches to realizing a realistic, lifelike character. However, the optimal control of each muscle to generate facial animation is complicated. Appropriate muscle actions are usually determined manually by trial and error. We introduce a technique for synthesizing realistic facial animation with a variety of facial expressions by automatically estimating facial muscle parameters through the manipulation of only a few control points on the face. We specify the control points in accordance with the movement of 3D markers obtained by a motion capture system. We also propose a facial expression cloning method that transfers an actor’s muscle parameters to another character.
