Gary P. Smaby is vice president and senior technology analyst with the investment firm of Piper, Jaffray, and Hopwood. He specializes in following high-tech companies involved in emerging information technologies, including supercomputers, networking systems, telecommunications, office automation and computer graphics. Prior to joining PUH, he was involved in a number of entrepreneurial ventures, including Realcom Corporation, a firm he founded as a business graphics service bureau. He served as president of Realcom for six years. In September 1983, Smaby published a comprehensive, 150-page investment research study entitled “Emerging Markets for Computer Graphics in Business.”
