Abstract:

In the Kinesthetic Intelligent Tutor System (KITS) we explore the possibilities of using robots as teaching tools for young children, especially those with special needs. Our robot is a facilitator to the childs education by instructing and motivating the child. To incorporate a system as complex as a robot intelligent tutor, many steps need to be taken in the planning stage to insure that the final product will be useful, as its design criteria will differ dramatically from other intelligent tutoring systems and research robotics. In this paper we present the initial experimental results from this robotic tutor, which employs additional novel kinesthetic interfaces, demonstrating its ability to engage children in a vocabulary learning game.
