SIGGRAPH 2002
Silicon Grail was founded in 1995 by Ray Feeney, a four-time Academy Award-winner for Scientific and Engineering Achievement and founder of RFX, Hollywood’s largest integrator of digital effects technology for over 20 years. Silicon Grail was founded in 1995 by Ray Feeney, a four-time Academy Award-winner for Scientific and Engineering Achievement and founder of RFX, Hollywood’s largest integrator of digital effects technology for over 20 years. Silicon Grail is viewed as an industry authority responding to our industry’s need for efficient, cost-effective, software based compositing solutions optimized for feature film and large format resolutions. Working with leading film professionals, Silicon Grail initially developed Chalice, the industry’s first commercially available compositing software to meet the rigorous demands of high-end 2D film compositing. Previously, most high-end film compositing was done with proprietary compositing scripts. Silicon Grail made compositing easier, less costly, and accessible to a wider range of users. Silicon Grail again set the standard with the launch of RAYZ – the most flexible and production friendly compositor available today. – – – – RAYZ architecture and image-centric work environment makes it exceptionally easy to learn and much faster to use than any other compositing software available today. The RAYZ GUI is fully customizable, scriptable and extensible. The interface features dockable or floating windows; drag and drop functionality; and customizable menus and tool bars. Users can easily configure the layout to suit their specific application and the way they prefer to work. Artists may also assign hotkeys to almost any command, allowing them to change or manipulate images while rarely moving the mouse from the image. Developing directly on multiple platforms ensures that RAYZ runs native under IRIX, Windows, Linux, and OS X while offering identical features and flexibility on all platforms. The ground-up rewrite of Silicon Grail’s proprietary imaging science yields smaller and more reliable code than the competition – leading to greater productivity. The RAYZ renderer also implements Composite Decision List (CDL) technology, a Silicon Grail computing strategy that rearranges node execution in order to minimize memory use for increased overall speed. – – A recent agreement between Kodak and Silicon Grail has provided Silicon Grail with the CINEON source code resulting in CINEON technologies that are now visible within RAYZ.
