Abstract:
We show that a class of topology optimization problems used to design statically or rotationally balanced rigid bodies admits optimal solutions with material interfaces formed by quadrics, such as ellipsoids or hyperboloids. This reduces the number of unknowns from infinite to less than 10 and yields a provably equivalent problem.
