    A saccade-contingent display for suppressing color breakup

Abstract:


    This work demonstrates a novel channel for a smart display to interact with its user for enhancing the viewing experience. By using a wearable electro-oculography (EOG) circuit, the saccadic eye movements can be detected so that the user’s viewing mode can be determined. Different gamut settings are used in the “fixation mode” versus “saccade mode,” such that the fast eye movement induced artifacts can be suppressed. Furthermore, by analyzing the saccade patterns, we can determine the user is in the “image viewing” mode or “text reading” mode. Then different brightness, contrast, saturation settings can be assigned accordingly and automatically to improve the user’s comfort level.
