Abstract:

We propose Nonlinear Compliant Modes — a physically principled extension of linear eigenmodes for large-deformation analysis of flexible structures. Suggesting their use as a design tool, we demonstrate how they can quickly uncover the characteristic deformation patterns of a structure, including nonlinear phenomena like buckling, stiffening, and multistability.
