Abstract:

In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana 2”, the main character, Moana, embarks on a journey further from home than she has ever been before, requiring more inner strength and tenacity as she journeys away from those she loves. Moana’s voyage takes her through magical and mystical worlds that greatly differ in visual design and style. The Directors of Cinematography talk through the lighting design and the camera language used across three of the songs from the film, “We’re Back”, “Get Lost” and “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?” and how they support the progression of Moana’s physical and emotional journey. Since each song reflects where she is in that journey, the cinematography for each employ three different visual styles, “Heightened Reality”, “Chaotic Theatrics” and “Playful Abstraction”, which celebrate the unique look and feel of these worlds.
