Abstract:

The Tactile hand display is an interactive artwork in which a hand that catches falling water droplets acts as the screen itself. The images and sensations of the droplets that are caught become one in the hand. Images are used to determine whether the water droplets touched the hand, and only the water droplets that are caught are processed as images displayed on the hand that caught them. No screen is required, because the participant’s hand itself becomes the display. This feature is a breakthrough in terms of both tactile displays and artistic expression. Our goal was to develop a display that combined the actual sensations of sight and touch.
