Abstract:

In creating the stylized organic environments of The Wild Robot, the goal was to enable 3D Look Dev Artists to work more similar to traditional artists, capturing the impromptu and organic techniques of 2D art. This required innovative new tools to overcome the constraints of the 3D medium, such as a stroke-based 3D modeling tool, an artist-friendly system for authoring painterly ground cover, and a new image format that enabled brushed partial transparencies on assets. Artists also leveraged techniques to help simplify and stylize the final images, such as simplified shading detail, artistic levels of detail, and new lighting display filters inspired by how traditional artists texture only in key light.
