Abstract:
This production session features Wētā FX’s VFX Supervisor Guy Williams, Framestore’s VFX Supervisor, Alexis Wasjbrot, and Sony Pictures Imageworks’ VFX Supervisor, Theo Bialek. Finishing the trilogy off in a crescendo of visual effects, they will discuss how they built and animated the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 characters, the tools they utilised and what went into creating the explosive third-act animation sequence.
Alexis has overseen some of the industry’s most entertaining action sequences, including fight sequences from Thor: Ragnarok and Spider-Man: Far From Home’s illusion battle. Alexis will discuss how his team utilized their propriety groom tool Fibre to build Rocket Raccoon and Cosmo the talking dog. To achieve the complex build of fan favourite character Groot, the team had to take a different approach – Alexis will cover the challenges his team faced and the techniques used to animate the loveable alien.
Theo Bialek has over two decades of industry experience, previously serving as VFX supervisor on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Theo will explore new characters and environments created for the film through animation studies and early concept work. He will also highlight workflows and techniques utilized on and off the set that led to the unique character styles and settings.
With an Academy Award nomination for his work on Vol 2. Guy is no stranger to the trilogies cinematic visuals and dramatic sequences. Guy will share how he and his team brought together the third act, including multiple fight sequences situated around the Arête spaceship, culminating in a spectacular 150 second long action sequence. This talk will conclude with Guy exploring the process for bringing together the final climatic sequence, as the Guardians make a desperate race against the explosive end of the Arête.
