Title:

    Motion Dynamics Animation Workshop

Presenter(s)/Author(s):

Abstract:

    Prerequisites
Familiarity with the basic concepts and practice of 3D computer animation. Not required: familiarity with motion dynamics or the Maya software package.

    Hands-On Course
Two software packages are required for hands-on participation in this course. These files MUST be installed before you attend the course:

    1. Course 38 work files. Download this .zip archive (150K) and install it on your laptop before you attend the course.

    2. Maya 4.5 (Windows 2000/XP Professional and Mac OS X). If you do not have Maya 4.5, a free “learning” version is available from Alias|Wavefront. Download Maya 4.5 PLE or purchase Alias|Wavefront’s DVD bundle (Maya 4.5 PLE plus some instructional material), at the same location.

After downloading Maya 4.5 PLE, you will be required to return to the Alias|Wavefront web site for a license code. Please install the Maya software well in advance to accommodate the installation and registration process.

The PLE version has all the functionality of the normal versions of Maya, except:

    • All rendered images have the Alias|Wavefront logo superimposed on them.
    • You can write files only in the PLE format, which is not readable by commercial versions of Maya.

Operating systems: Maya 4.5 runs on Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional, and Macintosh OS X (10.1.5 or higher).

Hardware: Alias|Wavefront recommends 512 MB of RAM, 450 MB of free hard-disk space, and an OpenGL graphics card. If you have a lesser configuration, Maya will usually function, but may run more slowly.

Attendees can also rent laptop computers and Maya 4.5 PLE at SIGGRAPH 2003.

    More information on hands-on courses.

    Topics
The principles and practice of motion dynamics simulations, physical properties of objects, forces, collisions, rigid bodies and soft bodies, springs and goal objects, playback issues, and combining keyframed animation with motion dynamics simulations. This course does not deal with the mathematics of motion dynamics.

    Description
A hands-on workshop dealing with the basic principles and techniques of motion dynamics animation. The course combines lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on tutorial exercises on workstations running the Maya software.
