Abstract:

Human process a large amount of information from ”background” as well as ”foreground” [Ishii et al. 1998]. All conventional communication methods such as a telephone, various kinds of chat softwares on PC etc., transmit messages from ”foreground” to us, and we may have to pay attention to the devices, while they are in use. On the other hand, ambient devices are sources transmitting small amount of but determinate information from ”background” which we can obtain without any consciousness. In this paper, we propose an ambient communication device, named funi (Flowers as User Networking Interface) which enable us to communicate with distant friends in ”background”. Although some studies on distant communication tools are proposed [Lee and Selker 2006; Chang et al. 2001], most of existing systems focus on peer-to-peer connection. Our system is not restricted to communication between 2 people, but designed for multiple users.
