Title:

    From See-Through to Be-Through: AR and the Future of User Interfaces

Presenter(s)/Author(s):

Abstract:

    Researchers have been exploring Augmented Reality (AR) for over 45 years, first in the lab and later in the streets. By interactively integrating virtual media with our perception of the physical world, AR makes it possible to experience vital information in situ that would otherwise be imperceptible. While the earliest AR research systems used head-worn displays, AR eyewear is now poised to take its first steps toward mainstream adoption, even as hand-held AR becomes more powerful. What will this new generation of AR make possible?

    I will suggest some of the ways AR will change our lives, whether in special-purpose domains, or in our daily interactions with the world. I will discuss how AR can augment viewpoints beyond our own first-person perspective, assist us as we work and play together, and create hybrid user interfaces in which multiple display and interaction devices complement each other.
