Abstract:

We proposed a novel method for differentiable rendering of heightfields by using maximum mipmap to accelerate discontinuity searching in the backward pass. Our differentiable renderer achieves real-time frame rates and unlocks interactive inverse rendering applications. We demonstrate our method with terrain optimization, geometric illusions, shadow optimization, and text-based shape generation.
