The University of Maryland, the state’s flagship institution of higher education, is one of the nation’s preeminent public universities. A global leader in research, entrepreneurship and innovation, UMD is home to nearly 41,000 students, 10,000 faculty and staff, and 250 academic programs, and counts more than 352,000 alumni. Its faculty includes three Nobel laureates, three Pulitzer Prize winners, 54 members of the national academies and scores of Fulbright scholars. The institution secures more than $550 million annually in external research funding. The university is particularly strong in areas related to computer science and engineering, with multiple ongoing projects involving autonomous robotics, computer vision, human-computer interaction, virtual and augmented reality, computer visualization and graphics, machine learning, quantum information science, natural language processing, and more. In 2019, the university dedicated the Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Engineering, a 215,000 square foot facility that supports cutting-edge research and scholarship in multiple areas of technology.
