The National Centre for Computer Animation has been at the forefront of computer graphics and animation education and research in the UK since 1989. The aim of the NCCA is to promote science in the service of the arts and to embed a theoretical underpinning within a contemporary professional setting, allowing graduates to leave BU with highly sought-after skills in the computer animation, visual effects and computer games industries. Bournemouth University has been granted Houdini Certified School status by Side Effects Software, is the academic partner for Unreal Engine and a number of our computer animation degrees are accredited by ScreenSkills, indicating the quality of those courses. SIGGRAPH 2004
The National Centre for Computer Animation at Bournemouth University offers four courses in computer animation: BA (Hons) in Computer Visualisation & AnimationPGDip/MA Computer AnimationPGDip/MA Computer Animation(Effects) PGDip/MScComputer Animation.These courses have been developed after extensive consultation with many of the leadingcompanies in the computer animation, digital effects and computer games industry. Strong industrial links will be maintained throughout these programmes of study with significant input from the industry in the form of industrial visits, specialist lectures andmaster classes.The BA(Hons) in Computer Visualisation and Animation was designed to develop instudents an interdisciplinary culture that transcends the art/science divide. It forms students into well rounded professionals with broad based digital media skills by developing their creative design skills as well as their programming and mathematical skills. It allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of the underlying technology and the creative practices of the field.The Masters are 1 year full-time courses where students will be able to specialise in the technical or the creative aspects of their chosen field. All Masters students will studytogether and share a number of units and group projects to develop broad-based digital media skills and an interdisciplinary culture. MA students will concentrate in developing their creative design skills as well as gain an understanding of the underlying technology. MA graduates pursue a career in industry as Character Animators, Effects Animators, Compositors, Games Animators, Games Designers, etc. MSc students will concentrate ondeveloping their problem solving and tool and technique development skills as well as gain an understanding of the creative practices of this field. MSc graduates pursue a career in industry as Technical Directors, Technical Animators, Effects Developers, Graphics Programmers, Games Developers, etc. The National Centre for Computer Animation has the most extensive computeranimation facilities in the UK and all students will have access to very sophisticated software and hardware, and will have the opportunity to create substantial works for digital media during their course of study.
