Abstract:

Discover how Call of Duty® is leading the charge towards sustainable gaming. This talk will emphasize the environmental impact of gaming, highlighting the energy consumption of retail devices and the carbon footprint of gameplay across several titles, with a focus on Call of Duty®. It calls for action to address these issues by promoting energy-saving modes and sustainable gaming practices. The talk will include detailed comparisons of power consumption metrics between different gaming scenarios and industry averages, showcasing the potential for energy savings through a suite of curated graphical features and optimizations. It outlines the first steps towards greener gaming, including implementation of in-game “Eco Mode” settings that empowers players to choose sustainable options without compromising the core game experience. Activision’s use of the Xbox Sustainability Toolkit, announced in 2023, will be covered as well. Our journey towards sustainability continues with forward looking ideas around technologies like super scaling & AI to enhance gaming performance while reducing power consumption. The presentation concludes with a call to action for the developer community to support a more sustainable future in gaming. Join us in creating a greener future for gaming.
