Description:

We developed a virtual reality head-mounted display (HMD) that provides an angular resolution of 90 pixels per degree (PPD), around 1000 nits brightness, and high contrast. Leveraging inside-out tracking from the Meta Quest, the HMD utilizes an optical design that achieves diffraction limited performance at 90 PPD. By utilizing Unreal Engine 5 and NVidia’s DLSS 3 AI supersampling method, hyper-realistic fidelity demos can be created at desired frame rates. We present this installation to exhibit the visual benefits of an ultra high resolution, high brightness and high contrast display, particularly for hyper realistic VR content. To our knowledge, this work is the first VR HMD that combines the visual benefits of above retinal resolution (90 PPD) with ~1000 nits of high brightness. When showcasing hyperrealistic rendered scenes, it provides a new milestone on how realistic VR experience can be.
