Description:

Inspired by Busby Berkeley, mass gymnastics, and experimental cinema from the 1920s and 1930s, “Divers” is a short animation that explores the abstraction of the human body into shapes and the absorption of the individual into the mass. Portions of the film were animated with the help of a custom animation toolset, Divers Animation Tools (developed by the director), an open-source set of MEL scripts that provide a Maya animator with a way to experiment with large-scale choreography using a relatively simple user interface and non-linear animation. The way the interface deals with the challenge of graphically representing the varying movements of a large group of characters over time in an editable way could contribute to future implementation of choreography-related software. The toolset and animation were created at Pratt Institute, with support from the Digital Arts Research Lab and the Department of Digital Arts.
