Description:
The Mill Los Angeles team of 3D artists relished the opportunity to work on the latest commercial for Swedish pension company AMF. Filip Engstrom directed the spot, which features a host of fully CG, photo-real insects. The star of the ad is a caterpillar who becomes forlorn until he transforms into a butterfl y. T h e Mill was involved in the early planning stages, and Jamie O’Hara (CG artist) created concept art for all the characters, paying particular attention to the caterpillar and butterfl y. Jamie notes: “I worked with the clients to fi ne-tune the insects, which had to have the correct balance of looking both characterful and realistic.” Robert Sethi (lead CG artist) comments: “Th e benefi t of working with a small team is that we were able to work closely together with the director, which is always fun and inspiring.” Steve Beck (CG artist) had just three weeks to animate the seven diff erent types of species featured in the 50-second spot. Becky Porter headed up the compositing team and crafted the CG components by adding bloomed highlights and chromatic splits to give them the qualities of macro photography.
