Artist Statement:
“Mimosa Pithics” revitalizes Hsinchu’s pith paper cultural heritage in Taiwan by integrating biomimicry, shape memory alloy (SMA) technology, and interactive design. This kinetic artwork features pith petals that open and close in response to viewer interaction, evoking the natural movement of a mimosa plant through infrared sensor activation. Developed in close collaboration with local pith paper artisans, the project highlights the expertise of traditional craftspeople while bridging heritage and contemporary technologies. By reimagining endangered crafts through hybrid methods, “Mimosa Pithics” fosters sustainable dialogues between tradition and innovation.
