Abstract:

For the HBO Original Limited Series THE PENGUIN, 3107 VFX shots were created across 8 episodes. In this direct sequel to the feature film THE BATMAN, the city is on its knees, making way for Oswald “Oz” Cobb to rise up as the new kingpin of Gotham City. On-set filming techniques included ground breaking interactive lighting for the visceral Oz action sequences. AI-driven workflows were employed to heighten the distress of a flood ravaged Gotham City. Young Victor witnesses the loss of his entire family in a flood, facilitated by complex simulations, striking the emotional core of viewers. Oz engages in a car chase filmed dry, but then immersed in torrential rain with a complex mix of classic 2d elements with sophisticated fx animation. New hybrid techniques in facial tracking augmented a progression of 10 years of visible torment for Sofia Falcone, as she was captive in Arkham Asylum. A car explosion ruptures the streets creating a massive sinkhole, with the help of new procedural destruction tools. All of the VFX were designed to service the characters and to tell their stories, to a degree that truly make the results no longer VFX work, but storytelling work. Our goal was for the viewer to not see the VFX, but to feel them. Join us as our team of industry leading VFX supervisors present the VFX of THE PENGUIN.
