Abstract:

This paper documents an interactive dance performance installation taking place in an 8 foot cubic mesh projection volume. The work centers on the immigrant detention facility on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay. The performer interacts with and controls media projections captured from the detention center, San Francisco Bay and archives of the Chinese American immigrant community. A real time camera based motion tracking system orchestrates and triggers responsive projections on the cube surfaces in response to the performer’s movements. Each chapter engages different parts of the performer’s body and different key movements to interact with the projected media.
