    Flowers and birds are one of the subjects in traditional Japanese painting, and some of them are designated as important cultural properties or national treasures. The system allows users to paint pictures of flowers and birds such that they can experience traditional painting with interest and enjoyment. The space comprises fusuma (papered sliding doors) and hanging scrolls, and users paint pictures on the fusuma using four different brushes. The brush type to be used is shown as an icon on the fusuma next to the object to be painted, and the user can select the appropriate brush for the object. The system allows seven objects to be painted, and the ink can be represented by a projected image from a projector, which can change the environment and the objects painted. For example, if one adds branches to a cherry tree, then flowers bloom around the branches, whereas if one paints a bird, then it traverses toward the hanging scroll. Objects that can be easily painted are selected such that users not skilled at painting can paint them, and for complex objects, only the easy sections are painted by the users. Additionally, this system uses actual hanging scrolls, fusuma, and brushes because the subject matter is traditional culture. To use actual brushes in the system, a tracker can be attached to each brush to project images based on the user’s brush strokes. In this system, the tracker is concealed by the user’s body and arms such that the picture can be painted on the fusuma, and the outside-in system may cause the tracker’s position to be unrecognizable. Therefore, an inside-out tracker is used.
