Artist Statement:

The evolution of panoramic photography, from its inception with the swing-lens camera in the 1840s to its integration into modern smartphones, has transformed how we capture and perceive images. This exhibit delves into an innovative use of panoramic photogra- phy, challenging the conventional method where a series of images are stitched together to create a continuous scene. Here, a different visual experience is crafted by exploiting the iPhone’s panoramic function without any technical modifications.
Displayed on the monitor, the image flows seamlessly from right to left. When viewed through an iPhone in panorama mode, the resulting photograph diverges from what is initially visible on the screen, creating a perceptual “gap” between reality and the captured panorama. This gap arises from the manipulation of scan timing, employing a slitscanning mechanism.
The viewer is invited to use the iPhone provided in the exhibition to engage with this artwork, encouraging a new way of seeing and interpreting visual information. This experience not only redefines the familiar use of smartphone technology but also stimulates a fresh perspective on how we interact with and understand visual media. By presenting this alternative method of panoramic pho- tography, the work prompts viewers to reconsider their everyday visual experiences and the potential for innovative interpretations.
