Preceding Emptiness was created by xLab co-founders designer Levi Hammett, architect Mohammad Suleiman, together with artist Hind Al Saad, and designer Fatima Abbas. Featured at the VCUarts? Language-as-Machine exhibition, and the ARS Electronica Festival – the work is the latest light installation in a series that imagines alternative typographic histories by constructing unconventional language-display technologies. It celebrates the formal potential of the Arabic language through bright, blinking words cycling through the segmented display. The words on rotation display the Arabized terms of code statements for Arabic software tools that were first developed by Arab scientists and researchers in the 1980s.
