SIGGRAPH Asia 2024
Mark Billinghurst is Director of the Empathic Computing Laboratory, and Professor at the University of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia, and also at the University of Auckland in Auckland, New Zealand. He earned a PhD in 2002 from the University of Washington and conducts research on how virtual and real worlds can be merged, publishing over 650 papers on Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, remote collaboration, Empathic Computing, and related topics. In 2013, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand, and in 2019, he was given the ISMAR Career Impact Award in recognition of his lifetime contribution to AR research and commercialization. In 2022 he was selected for the ACM SIGCHI Academy, for leading human-computer interaction researchers, and also selected for the IEEE VGTC VR Academy for leading VR researchers.
SIGGRAPH Asia 2023
Prof. Mark Billinghurst is an expert in human-computer interface technology, particularly Augmented Reality (AR). He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington in 2002, where he created the Magic Book—an interactive children’s book viewed through a head-mounted display. He received accolades like the Discover Magazine Award in 2001 for this innovation. Prof. Billinghurst is known for his contributions to Human Interface Technology research and was featured at the Carter Holt Harvey New Zealand Innovation Pavilion in 2002-2003. He’s been recognized with a World Technology Award nomination and appointed to the New Zealand Government’s Growth and Innovation Advisory Board. His research centers on advanced 3D user interfaces, including Wearable Computing for small, collaborative devices, Shared Space to enhance collaboration through AR, and Multimodal Input, combining natural language and AI for intuitive human-computer interaction using voice, gesture, speech, gaze, and body motion.
