Abstract:

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal – every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.
In this session, our filmmakers break down their collaborative process in creating the iconic song sequence, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” We’ll start off by discussing the work and tight focus that went into creating this large, diverse, magical family. We will discuss our approach to building characters for a musical set in Colombia, knowing they would have to move and dance in a very specific way. We will also dive deeply into the cinematography process for this sequence – discussing the theatrical inspiration and the partnerships between choreography, layout, and animation. We will also reveal why certain editing and lighting choices were made to allow viewers to experience a single-cut feel, both theatrically and musically, throughout the song.
