Abstract:
The National Science Foundation supports projects to improve education in science, mathematics, engineering and technology through several programs in the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) in the Education and Human Resources (EHR) Directorate and programs in the research directorates such as Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). In CISE, for example, the Combined Research and Curriculum Development and Educational Innovation (CRCD/EI) and Information Technology Workforce (ITWF) programs support educational developments, and DUE works with these programs. Computer graphics education can be supported through projects that respond to appropriate program solicitations in DUE, CISE, or the Engineering Directorate, and education involving computer graphics can be supported by programs in all the NSF research directorates. For example, projects including GIS systems might be appropriate for the Geosciences Directorate. Further, computer graphics projects involving online collections might be appropriate for the National STEM Education Digital Library (NSDL).
This Forum presents a description of some programs in these areas and discusses the characteristics of a competitive proposal and the proposal and review processes. The main emphasis in the presentation is the Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) program in DUE. Within the time limits of the Forum, attendees are invited to describe their experience with reviewing and proposals, and to explore project ideas with the presenter and other attendees. Further discussion is invited outside the Forum.
The National Science Foundation is actively seeking to increase both the number and competitiveness of proposals to the CCLI program. Most CCLI proposals come from faculty who attend or have attended conferences or workshops on education, such as the SIGGRAPH Education program, and we want to help you be more successful.
